The Utah Cellists

The Utah Cellists is a constantly-evolving group of young performers from the studios of Elliott and Carey Cheney who present solo and cello ensemble concerts locally and also internationally. This year the members were Sophie Spreier, Livingston Cheney, Thomas Morgan and Melinda Pehrson. They presented three concerts in Mexico City at the Festival Internationale Cedros-Universidad Panamericana. They performed concerti by Elgar, Saint-Saens. Popper and solo works by Bach, Squire, Vivaldi, Summer and Saint-Saens.
The Utah Cellists act as musical ambassadors to local, national and international communities, presenting excellent performances that inspire and delight audiences.

SOPHIE SPREIER (2012)

Sophie Spreier, age 20, is in her second year studying Music Performance at Utah State University. WIth 17 years of cello study, 10 years being with Carey Cheney, she's had opportunities to take lessons with Eleanore Schoenfeld, Gilda Barston, Rick Mooney, and many others. Sophie's favorite experience so far was a trip to New York City for a lesson with Yo-Yo Ma.

LIVINGSTON CHENEY (2012)

Livi Cheney, age 16 is in the eleventh grade at Brighton High School. He picked up his first cello at 18 months and began lessons at age three. He has traveled all over the world with his parents to music festivals and workshops throughout the US and Canada, and Turin, Italy. Livi enjoys video games, drawing, strategy games and swimming.

THOMAS MORGAN (2012)

Thomas Morgan, 14, has been studying with Carey Cheney for 9 years and has enjoyed numerous opportunities to learn and share music. He has attended workshops and performed in Utah, California, Chicago, Hawaii and Mexico City. He attends Clayton Middle School where he is in the 8th grade. In his free time he enjoys soccer, basketball, snow and waterskiing.

MELINDA PEHRSON (2012)

Melinda has been studying the cello for 5 years and has played in an orchestra for four years. She has traveled to California three times: twice with her orchestra and once to participate at the National Cello Institute Winter Workshop. Melinda is a Junior Olympic Diver and Loves to downhill ski. She loves to play her cello who she named “Melody”.
